Based in Cape Town, Anelle du Plessis is an artist whose work is inspired by the quiet beauty of nature. Although creativity had long been a personal hobby, the stillness of the pandemic provided the time and space for her to begin translating the world around her onto canvas. With the beauty all around her she had no limit in subjects to paint, but birds stood out as her favorite.
Her garden serves as her sanctuary, alive with birds whose movement and song inspire her paintings. For Anelle, birds represent freedom and joy—a love rooted deeply in her family heritage. Their vitality fills her days and finds expression in her art. She wants to display this joy and freedom in her art and give it to those that want to see.
Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, she explores the energy and color of birds. What joy even colour in nature can provoke. A signature moment in each piece is the placement of a single white dot in the bird’s eye, a small but powerful detail that brings personality and life to her subjects. It is as if they instantly become her friends, with their very own personality and song . Through her work, Anelle celebrates freedom, color, and the quiet music found in nature’s simplest moments. With this project she would like to give a „song“ to children that need joy and freedom in their lives.
Anelle’s birds are painted with acrylic on stretched canvas, partly mounted on mixed backgrounds – the colours are way more intense and shiny in reality!
