Boyi Molefe

The South African artist Boyi Molefe works and presents his pieces at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, a central hub for art and design. With over 70 years of age, his work combines personal experience with cultural influences from South Africa.

Molefe began engaging artistically with his own environment at a young age. His early works primarily depict landscapes and natural scenes from his home village. Over time, he also turned to portraying people from his personal surroundings. These subjects reflect his approach of processing biographical and cultural themes through art.

Over the course of his development, his style has evolved. While his earlier works can be associated more closely with realism, he now describes his practice as influenced by expressionism. This shift places less emphasis on precise representation and more on expression, atmosphere, and emotional impact. His aim is to create art that resonates emotionally while conveying elements of South African identity.

A key component of his current work is woodcut printing. This technique allows him to develop a reduced, high-contrast visual language defined by clear lines and forms. The handcrafted process gives each piece an individual character, as every print contains slight variations.

Molefe sees himself as an artist in continuous development and deliberately avoids being confined to a single style. His work exemplifies a connection between personal narrative, artistic transformation, and the intention to make cultural experience visually tangible.
